Brief History of Curling in KingTownship

For over 50 years, curlers of KingTownship have been meeting once a week in Nobleton and Schomberg Arenas to curl on hockey ice.

It could be argued that curling on hockey ice is one of the most masterful divisions of this winter sport. The arena employees did their best, with what tools they possessed, to prepare the hockey ice for this once-a-week event. We curlers offer them our heartfelt thanks; but, no matter what they did, one can't change the fact that you are curling on hockey ice, prepared by a zamboni not by a skilled curling ice technician with specialized equipment.

The hockey ice provides an enjoyable night of curling filled with new challenges and creative skipping each week. Some weeks, a skip may have to stand on sheet four to place the broom for rocks being played sheet five. Other times, the rocks will not curl as they move complacently down a zamboni line, one after another, for the duration of the entire game. Throwing a rock from the hack is also a challenging task, as the house is not clearly visible from the opposite end of the ice. Curling houses and lines are faintly painted under the crease area and multiple other lines used for hockey criss-cross the curling sheets. The muscles of the arena curler are much more developed as take out weight on curling ice is only draw weight on hockey ice. There are many more exciting factors of Hockey Arena Curling, too many to list here.

The curlers of KingTownship had thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and moments of frustration of curling on hockey ice, but decided on a change.

Having tried twice previously over the years, in 2007, the process of obtaining a dedicated curling facility in KingTownship was begun once a gain by a committee of enthusiastic curlers from both the Nobleton and Schomberg Curling Clubs. Through effective communication, collaboration and support from both governmental and the private sectors of the Township, the goal was realized for the 2011-2012 curling season. The King Curling Club opened its doors as part of the new King Township Recreation Centre – The Trisan Centre, located in the industrial area of Schomberg, south of Hwy 9 and east of Hwy 27.

The ground breaking took place on March 5, 2010 with construction starting on our new facility shortly after. The expected completion date and grand Opening was April 30, 2011. World Champion curlers Glen Howard and Wayne Middaugh participated in the King Curling Club Opening in October of 2012. The new facility consists of a hockey arena, a fitness centre, a four-sheet curling rink and an emergency response station.

With the dedicated commitment of members of the Nobleton and Schomberg Curling Clubs, community associations and organizations, local businesses and residents, all levels of government, and curling associations, the vision has become a reality. The community should be very proud of the establishment of the King Curling Club in its own dedicated curling facility. With a strong core of volunteer leaders our young club continues its efforts to improve and expand its programmes.

As our 2023/24 curling season draws to a close, the Board of Directors would like you to take a few
minutes to give us feedback on how we can improve the KCC. The information we gather from this
survey will help the Board plan for the 2024/25 season, and assist in our continued efforts to provide you with a great curling
experience.

In order to make the results meaningful we ask that every member please take 10-15 minutes to complete the online survey. Your feedback is completely anonymous.

The survey is open until Wednesday, March 20.

January 23, 2014

The Tuesday night Ladies League finally got their second half of the season underway last week, after Mother Nature forced the Rockettes to cancel game one due to the weather.

Sheet two on this balmy night featured Team Oakley against the undefeated Team Bones.  Skip Julie Oakley along with team mates Michelle Boynton, Pam McKinley and Sue Sheardown (spare) knew their game would be tough against veteran Fran Bones, but intended to give it their best shot.  Both teams giving up only a single in point in the opening ends, settled down to what be a nail- biting, "edge-of your sea"t kind of game.  Oakley's front end of Boynton and McKinley did a tremendous job judging the rock weight and throwing great guards to set up the house. Bone's Lead Tamara Niepage and 2nd Cheryl Hamilton also threw some beautiful stones into the guard zone and into the rings when needed.

Mid-way through the game, Sue Sheardown executed a picture perfect double take out allowing Oakley to throw both stones into the 4 foot.  Skip Fran Bones always faces the pressure with ease, retaliated with her signature draw to count the go ahead point.  Bones taking control in the 6th, added the pressure forcing Oakley to draw to the button against 4 opposition stones.  Oakley threw to the broom and left it to her brushers with Sheardown calling the line.  Boynton and Mckinley scrubbed the ice placing the stone on the button for the tying point.

In the 7th and final end, Boynton made an amazing come around to sit on the button directly behind cover and virtually impossible to remove.  Oakley guarded up the front of the house making things difficult for Bones, but left a narrow port for the veteran to try for a final draw and claim the win.  Team Oakley could only stand in the background and wait as Bones threw her final stone.  Sweepers Niepage and Hamilton were on the brushing right away while Vice Debby Johansson called the line.  As the rock slowed down, the brushing got faster, and the hurry hard got louder.  The rest of the leagues' Rockettes watched from the sidelines with growing excitement as Team Oakley snagged the 5-4 win after Team Bones' rock came up just short of the counting point.

The fund provides for an equal sharing of the cost; such that, the federal Government is contributing $4.720 million, the Province $4.720 million and the Township $4.720 million. The King Community, in turn, has committed to raise $400,000 towards the cost.

Bricks and naming rights are being sold; whereby, individuals can donate directly to the new building fund, and be recognized, in perpetuity, as a contributor. A donation wall, recognizing these contributions, will be suitably located in the public area within the new facility, and charitable donation receipts are provided. The curlers and other user groups are sponsoring fundraising events such as dances and golf tournaments. Curlers, hockey players, figure skaters and other community users are encouraged to support fundraising, in recognition of past and present uses of existing township recreational facilities, and in anticipation of future uses of the new facility.
See the summary below for more information on making a contribution, or visit the Township of King website at www.king.ca for more information. To donate or participate in the fundraising campaign please contact Laura Campbell, (905)833-5321 or [email protected].

Grand Opening

The official opening of the TRISAN Centre, our new King Township Arena, Curling and Fitness Centre was on Saturday April 30, 2011.

Background and Facility Status

Three years ago, the process of having a dedicated curling facility in King Township was begun by a committee of curlers from both the Nobleton and Schomberg Curling Clubs. Through effective communication, collaboration and support from both the public and private sectors of the township, that goal is to be realized for the 2011-2012 curling season. The new King Curling Club will open its doors as part of the new King Township Recreation Centre, located in the industrial area of Schomberg, south of Hwy 9 and east of Hwy 27.

Maple Reinders was contracted to construct the new arena and curling facility at the November 30, 2009 Council meeting. The ground breaking took place on March 5, 2010 with construction starting on our new facility shortly after. The expected completion date and grand Opening is April 30, 2011. The facility will consist of a hockey arena, a fitness centre, a four-sheet curling rink and a and paramedic response station.

The ground breaking ceremony was hosted by Mayor of King Township Margaret Black and attended by Member of Parliament Paul Calandra, Member of Provincial Parliament Dr. Helena Jaczek and York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.

Progress on the new facility is moving along on schedule. These images were taken during June 2010.

July 2010, progress continues.

Progress on August 2010.

Progress to September 17th, 2010.

Progress to October 14th, 2010.

The first two Curling Clinics of the season were held this Saturday, October 19, and were a resounding success. Our favourite coach, Torie Abbotts, returned to lead our coaches and curlers in an inspirational morning of skills, drills, and practice tips. Being eight months pregnant, participants were a little concerned every time Torie was instructing on "delivery" but we made it through the morning without calling on our paramedics. Our curlers were so impressed with their positive learning that they requested another skills check-up clinic early in the New Year. Stay Tuned!

In the afternoon of the same day, our own Murray Mellow led a keen group of curlers who learned to love the stick. For those having difficulty with knees, joints, and back pain when delivering, the stick is your comfortable answer. And with a little practice, you can walk your way to deadly accuracy.

All participants will be receiving a brief online survey to complete, and the anonymous results will be shared on our bulletin board.

Looking forward to seeing the hotshots at our Strategy Clinic with Derek Abbotts on November 2.

Derek put 20 King curlers, including four of our Bantam/Junior competition team members, through four hours of brain-stretching and precision curling as we explored the depths of strategy and tactics on and off the ice. A big thanks to all of our volunteer coaches for their assistance at both of our fall clinics (and those to come).

Fellow KCC member Karel Span was recently recognized by the Southlake Regional Health Centre, in a recent press release, for his long standing participation in the 'Run for Southlake' fundraising event. This same news article is reproduced below;

Press Release

King Man Celebrates 9 Years of Running for Southlake
78-year old Karel Span knows too well the importance of critical health care close to home, and has been fundraising for it for nearly a decade.

Schomberg, ON – 45 minutes – that’s 78-year old Karel Span’s goal for completing the five kilometer Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake this year. “Last year I did it in 43 minutes but I’m 78 so I feel like this is a good goal,” said Span.

For nearly a decade, Span has participated and fundraised for a cause close to his heart - Southlake Regional Health Centre – via the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake. As Team Captain of the ‘King Curling Club’ run team, Karel has raised over $10,000 for the hospital over the course of his participation, last year raising $3,680.

“Both my wife and I have received incredible care at Southlake, primarily within the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre as both of us have been touched by the disease. The way physicians, nurses and staff treat patients here is exceptional.  Even during the hard times of COVID, they still worked so hard to be compassionate and make people like us feel comfortable”.

As a resident of Schomberg, Karel has rallied his network to support the event.  “The members of the King Curling Club are helping to drive pledges online, and we have pledge forms and posters all around the club.  I also speak to residents in my condo building about it and many of them have stepped-up to support me and the team”.

According to Southlake Foundation President and CEO Jennifer Ritter, Span’s story is exactly what the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake is all about. “This is our largest annual community-based fundraiser at Southlake - the key word being community. Each year, we see champions like Karel advocate for Southlake and activate their personal networks to fundraise for the critical equipment needs across our hospital and we are so grateful.  When our community rallies around Southlake, the results are inspiring and nothing short of incredible.”

As spring weather finally starts to emerge, Ritter is hoping to see the community support the event in historical numbers.  “Last year, we had over 800 participants run, walk or participate in their own way, on their own time. I hope our family, friends and neighbours will join Karel this year, so we can see registrations return to pre-COVID, with over 1500 participants coming together in support of their hospital and community!”

The 2023 Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake takes place on Sunday, April 30, 2023.  Participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of $100 for this year’s event.  Registration fees cover event costs, so that 100% of participants’ fundraising dollars can be directed towards the critical needs of the hospital.

Registration is open now at: www.runforsouthlake.ca

Inglis Wasylkiw teams at the STOH Jan 2023
Three of the eight curlers pictured above are offspring of KCC Members. Far left is Danielle Inglis (skip of Team Inglis), daughter of Mark and Lorraine Inglis. Far right is Katelyn Wasylkiw (skip of Team Wasylkiw) with sister Lauren (vice) standing next to her, both daughters of Peter Wasylkiw. These two teams had been competing at the 2023 Ontario - Scotties Tournament of Hearts Championship just recently. Team Inglis had a terrific run making it all the way to the semi-finals, with a chance to play Team Holman in the Finals. The game was a nailbitter, going to an extra end, but without hammer. Team Inglis was in position for the steal, and the win, however Team Duncan's final rock was a perfectly thrown draw to the button to win the game.
Join us in congratulating both the Inglis and Wasylkiw families for the success they have achieved in Curling and in wishing their daughters continued success in the sport.

Stratcona Cup Opening Ceremony

The Strathcona Cup that was recently held at KCC on Saturday, January 21, was truly a spectacular success, and a 'pure dead brilliant' event!  An outstanding job performed by all; organizers, volunteers, Bob's ice crew, and curlers alike. Special mentions go to Mark Inglis for getting us involved and leading the way, from beginning to end; Larry Sheardown for putting together a mighty volunteer crew; Christine Warner for handling the logistics of the day flawlessly; and Gino DiFebo for lovingly preparing a delicious main feature for lunch - beef brisket -  a 'well tidy scran'!

Special thanks to the following members and businesses for their contributions made in support of this event; Barb & Karl Davis of Green Tractors Nobleton, Dan Steenhoek of Silver Birch Contracting, Sharon Downey of Party Magic, Corrie Oukes and Tim Hortons. Thanks also to James Price for his photography of the event.

Shellee Morning’s weekly article for the King Sentinel, published on Wednesday January 25, features a great write-up of the day’s events including wins by Team Campbell and Team Davis. Please use the following link to read the full article; Strathcona Cup - Canada vs Scotland

Those of you who were unable to attend, you may be interested in viewing some of the many great photos taken, which can be found in our Photo Gallery.

Congratulations to all involved…..King Curling Club certainly put their best foot forward with this event and that sentiment was echoed by this Instagram post by one of the Scottish curlers, Alan Chalmers, regarding their time spent at KCC:

The echoes of the hurry hard will once again embark on the sheets of King Curling starting September 27.

As the curling brooms are beginning to make their way out of the closet, curlers are counting down to the start of the 2021-22 curling season. WarmUP Week, September 27-October 1, opens the Club’s season and the excitement is in high gear with events already filling up.  Note that all events are for registered members only with the exception of Curling 101 which is open to the public.  If you are not already registered do so right away and join the excitement.  All participants are required to be fully vaccinated.

WarmUP Week will give you the opportunity to hone your skills on free practice ice and to join instructional classes. Curling 101 returns for those who have never tried curling and would like to, and for those with only 2 years curling experience or less.  Curling 102 is provided for curlers returning to action who want to polish off the rust, and revisit game strategies. New for this season’s opening week is instruction in Stick Curling. This October 1 morning course will introduce techniques and rules that apply to players using a stick to deliver rocks.  Youth are invited to come on Thursday September 30, 4-6pm and bring a friend. All of our introductory courses will include changes to the curling game and lounge rules that have been affected by Covid-19 protocols.

Register for WarmUp Week sessions on our website using the top menu item “Calendar/Events” and choose “Event Registration”.

League Structure and Registration Updates for the 2013-2014 Season

Leagues

Here are a few updates as a follow-up to our recent presentation to the membership regarding league structure and format for the coming season. The changes are based on feedback from both the members and the board:

 1) Friday Mixed Social League will remain unchanged for next season as the "Mixed Pairs" format for Friday nights was not well received. Couples who would like to curl together on one team as a mixed pair (one female curler/one male curler) will be accommodated when requested.

 2) A New Sunday Mixed Recreational League will be offered on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon. The format will be the same as the Tuesday/Thursday Mixed Recreational Leagues as a ‘tag-draw’, with teams made up on the day of the game. This league will be dependent upon interest with a minimum registration of curlers required.

3) To accommodate league growth both now and in the future, King Curling Club will reserve the right to institute byes for all leagues to support an increase in membership. This is a very common arrangement in most established curling clubs. As conveyed previously, the mixed team entry league on Thursday will have a limit of 18 teams. This means there would be 2 or 3 nights off for the season. Similarly on Mondays the men’s team entry league will need to spill over to Tuesday for 4 – 6 games per year depending on the number of teams registered.

 Membership Fees

The board has decided that we will maintain the current fee structure for the coming season. Thanks to our strong volunteer base we have been able to keep our costs in line with revenues and have provided the following incentives for early registration and payment:

A 5% discount will be offered to members who make full payment by July 31st. Otherwise, full payment of fees must be received by the club by September 1, 2013.

 Registration Changes & Deadlines

Curling club management software has recently been purchased to better serve the membership with on-line, up to date information. The program features include an on-line registration process. We hope to have this ready and be open for registrations by March 15, 2013. This is a tentative date only. All current members will be given access to register themselves and get confirmation of their registration using the software. Members without an email address or access to a computer will need to register at the club and a day will be announced for this.

Placement in leagues is on a first come basis. To maintain your membership in current leagues, registration accompanied by full payment or a minimum $100 non-refundable deposit must be received by April 13, 2013.

Saturday December 27 2014

Sorry - we are full!

  • It takes about 1000 hours of volunteerism to run the KCC bar for the season.
  • We have over 60 youth curling members.
  • It only takes an unpadded knee or hand only 3 seconds to damage the ice and it take 30 minutes to repair the damage.
  • Our ice rental fees cover the cost of the 5 Township staff who are directly involved in some way with the maintenance of the curling facility. 100% of the other work needed to keep the Club vital and functioning is performed by volunteers.
  • On average adult curling rocks weight 44 lbs.
  • We have a full set of 34 junior rocks that weigh 20 lbs each and are used in our Little Rocks programme for children ages 6 to 12
  • The junior rocks stored in cabinets on the side boards can not be placed directly on the ice or they will melt the ice.  The must be properly cooled for about 1 hour on plastic mats on the ice before they can be used.
  • Our 4 ice sponsors donated $3000 each towards the cost of our full ice installation application that will save the Township $2500 per year in the cost of paint and materials for the next 5 to 7 years. There also is a cost saving to the environment by eliminating the dumping of used paint at the end of each year.
  • We have over 20 members coaching in various capacities.
  • Even if you only curl once a week you should replace your broom head insert and your grippers every year.
  • Last year the KCC booked 98% of the ice time rented.
  • We have two extra rocks of each size in case a rock should be become damaged and not useable.
